Vol. LXVI, May 2009

Like Spring Awakening, But With MPCs

Maybe it was just a case of post-SXSW/WMC immune-system shutdown, but April ended up being a pretty quiet, drizzly month in the Ghostly camp. Kate Simko's stunning Music From the Atom Smashers notwithstanding, we spent much of April re-gathering our strength for the mad, massive month of May. Here's what's up: Deastro's busting out all over with a new single ("Vermillion Plaza"), album (Moondagger), and profile video in the can; School of Seven Bells are touring the UK and US behind a new single of their own ("My Cabal"); orchestral-pop group Choir of Young Believers debut with their epic single "Action/Reaction"; and Ghostly's old friends Mobius Band are celebrating the UK release of their album Heaven with a little help from their buddies in Editors . This month's GhostlyCast podcast, a mid-'80s jam called "Dollar Dance," comes courtesy of Travis "TK" Disko.

May's got a few solid events as well, including the Detroit edition of our ongoing 10th-anniversary party (pick up advance tix at The Ghostly Store), a hoard of Ghostly/Spectral artists at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and The Sight Below and Lusine storming Montreal's MUTEK festival.

Lastly, a whistle-wetter: we've got a Ghostly iPhone application in the works. All we can say for now is that it'll be free, and it'll provide a new way for you to discover music. (Sign up for updates here).

My Cabal (12"/digital single)
The Brooklyn shoegazers' newest single is a a sophisticated dream-pop anthem, invoking technology and the supernatural via a drum-machine throb, a few chiming guitars, and a tingly, My Bloody Valentine-style atmospheric “whoosh.”

Choir of Young Believers
Choir of Young Believers
Action/Reaction (digital single)
The debut single from our newest signees. The song's loping beat and air of symphonic grandeur may be the first things you notice, but it’s Choir of Young Believers’ namesake vocal polyphony that keeps the goosebumps a-coming.
